A businessman named Lokman, 45, was shot and robbed of $17,000 in Motijheel area of Dhaka city. He sustained three gunshot wounds to his hand and leg and was rescued and taken to Mugda Medical College Hospital.
The incident took place on Sunday around 3:15 pm in front of Janata Bank at Shapla Chattar in Motijheel.
Police said they reached the scene immediately after receiving a call to the national emergency helpline 999 and rescued the injured man, providing initial assistance.
Confirming the incident, Motijheel Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Kamruzzaman Talukder said Lokman is a money exchange businessman. He was passing through Shapla Chattar when assailants arrived on a motorcycle and opened fire on him. They also took away his bag, which reportedly contained $17,000.
He added that the businessman was hit by one bullet below the elbow and two bullets below the knee. Police are investigating to identify those responsible.
Motijheel Deputy Commissioner (DC) Md. Harun-or-Rashid said the businessman reported that the bag contained $17,000 along with other domestic and foreign currencies. He added that the victim used to operate a currency exchange business at various locations.
