Former minister Latif Siddique arrested

Former minister Abdul Latif Siddique has been arrested in connection with the murder case at Shapla Chattar. He was arrested today (Wednesday) at his residence in Gulshan, Dhaka, by the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

This information was confirmed by Shafiqul Islam, Additional Commissioner of the DB.

He said the former Minister of Textiles and Jute Abdul Latif Siddique was arrested at Gulshan in the capital. An arrest warrant had already been issued against him by the International Crimes Tribunal.

Earlier, former minister Abdul Latif Siddique had announced his intention to surrender in the crimes against humanity case filed over the massacre that took place during a Hefazat-e-Islam rally at Shapla Chattar in Motijheel more than a decade ago.

He said that if had he not been arrested, he would have surrendered before the International Crimes Tribunal next Sunday or Monday and applied for bail.

Latif Siddique made these remarks to journalists after appearing before the court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Rana in Dhaka today.
