A man named Farhad Hossain Joni (35) has allegedly been burned to death in Muktagacha, Mymensingh. On Wednesday, petrol was thrown on him and he was set on fire in the Madhyahisya area of the municipal town. He died today, Thursday, around noon at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. Before that, he told police that two people had set him on fire.

He was the son of Abdus Sattar of the Madhyahisya area. He worked as a vegetable seller. He was often seen in various social movements in the area. In the last national parliamentary election, he had also announced that he would run from the Mymensingh-5 constituency.

The victim’s father, Sattar, said his son left home around 10 pm last night. At that time, two masked men grabbed him from behind, poured petrol on his body, and set him on fire. Hearing his screams, people nearby rescued him and took him to Muktagacha Health Complex.

From there, he was shifted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital at night. Farhad died around 12 pm today.

His father said Farhad was involved in various social movements, including anti-drug programs. He said, “A few days ago, sacks full of documents were being stolen from the Muktagacha land office that he had obstructed. He had published a video of it. There were disputes between Farhad and some people over these various incidents. They may be behind this incident.”
SI Md. Nazmul of Muktagacha Police Station said he spoke with Farhad while he was being taken to Mymensingh Medical in the ambulance.
“Farhad said two people set him on fire. But he could not recognize them. He could not say why it had happened either. He was not in a condition to speak more with him. His condition was very bad.”

Officer-in-Charge (OC) Kamrul Islam of Muktagacha Police Station sees this as a murder.

“An investigation is ongoing to find out why the incident of burning to death occurred. The body is in the hospital morgue. Legal measures in this incident are underway,” said the OC.
