Bangladesh national team cricketer Nayeem Hasan has been beaten and harassed by individuals claiming to be Detective Branch (DB) of police. Nayeem said the harassment took place on Friday night around 11:30 PM during a search operation at the exit of the Lalkhan Bazar flyover in Chattogram, while he was returning from the airport.
After serious allegations emerged that Nayeem was choked and beaten, police withdrew three members, including a Sub-Inspector (SI). They have been attached to the police lines.
Cricketer Nayeem said he was returning to Chattogram by flight after playing in the Dhaka Premier League. He boarded a CNG-run auto-rickshaw from the airport at 11 PM. When the CNG-auto reached the descending part of the Lalkhan Bazar flyover, people identifying themselves as police stopped his vehicle for a search. At one point, plainclothes police officers choked him, beat him, and took him to the police station.
He alleged that he was harassed even after identifying himself as a national team cricketer. During the incident, a person hit him with a pipe. Naeem said that after being taken to the police station, law enforcers became more accommodating only after he contacted senior officials, including BCB President Tamim Iqbal.
Meanwhile, police said that following the incident, three individuals, including an SI from Khulshi Police Station, were withdrawn on Saturday morning. CMP's Additional Deputy Commissioner (Public Relations) Aminur Rashid said, "I have heard about the incident. I am going to the office now. This is being looked into with utmost seriousness."
In connection with this incident, SI Shafiqul Islam and two constables from Khulshi Police Station have been closed (removed from duty).
