Incarcerated former Home Secretary Jahangir Alam has been formally shown arrested in a murder case filed with the capital's Kotwali Police Station. He was brought to court in a wheelchair with police assistance for the hearing.
Following the hearing on Wednesday, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Nazmin Akter granted the application to show him arrested. He was subsequently taken back to the court lockup in a wheelchair, wearing handcuffs, a helmet, and a bulletproof jacket.
Farzana Yasmin Rakhi, the lawyer for Jahangir Alam, stated that her client is extremely ill and unable to stand due to severe pain. She noted that he has now been shown arrested in 16 separate cases, which she described as a total violation of human rights.
Earlier, an application was submitted to show him arrested in the murder case of victim Ripon, a Dhaka City Corporation cleaning worker, who was killed during the student movement in the Kotwali area. Inspector Mohsin Uddin of the Lalbagh Zone Team, the investigating officer of the case, filed the plea.
According to the case details, on August 4, 2024, during a peaceful program of the student movement at the Sadarghat DIT Bazar intersection under Kotwali Police Station, leaders and activists of the Awami League, Chhatra League, Jubo League, and other affiliated organizations launched an armed attack. During the incident, Ripon was shot in the neck and collapsed. He later died on the night of August 5, 2024, while undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases. On August 28, 2024, the victim's wife, Fahima, filed a murder case at Kotwali Police Station.
