OC arrested after claiming 'Nothing Will Happen If Sheikh Hasina returns in December'

Mohammad Rakibul Hasan Rakib, the recently withdrawn Officer-in-Charge (OC) of DMP's Cantonment Police Station, has been shown arrested. Preparations were completed to produce him before the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court sometime on Thursday night.

Recently, an audio recording of him went viral on social media. In the widely circulated audio, a voice—alleged to be his—is heard discussing the operational capacity of the police force, the stance of field-level officers, and the potential return of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to the country.

In the recording, the individual is heard saying, "The police on the streets are very weak. If Sheikh Hasina returns in December, they won't be able to do anything."

The audio also contained claims that a section of senior police officials was leaning toward the BNP, while field-level police personnel did not share that position. News reports also noted that the conversation touched upon allegations of bribery regarding postings within various police positions.

Following the leak of the audio clip, intense discussions broke out across social media, eventually drawing mainstream media attention. In the wake of the controversy, Rakibul Islam was subsequently withdrawn from his position as the OC of Cantonment Police Station.
