Uncle Obaidur also sent to jail in case over alleged abetment of Mariam’s suicide

A court has sent Obaidur Rahman, an accused in a case filed over the alleged abetment of the suicide of Mariam Khatun, the second wife of Satkhira-4 MP G.M. Nazrul Islam, to jail.
Obaidur, who was arrested, was produced before the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court today, Wednesday. The investigation officer of the case, Detective Branch (DB) Inspector Mohammad Salauddin, sought an order to keep him in jail. Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam granted the request and ordered that the accused be sent to jail.
Obaidur was named as an accused in the case filed by Mariam’s father, Masum Billah, with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station after Mariam’s body was recovered hanging from Nazrul’s flat on September 20.
Obaidur is Mariam’s maternal uncle. He previously worked as MP Nazrul’s driver. Masum Billah alleged that his brother-in-law Obaidur had pushed his daughter towards death.
The case was initially investigated by the police station. Later, the investigation was transferred to the DB.
In his petition to the court, current investigation officer Salauddin said evidence had been found indicating that the accused was involved in the incident surrounding Mariam’s suicide. According to the investigation, Obaidur had been involved with MP Nazrul Islam in various activities even before Mariam’s marriage and had continued to carry out various activities in connection with him. The investigation officer said the police would seek his remand in the future if necessary for the investigation and that he therefore needed to be kept in custody.
Obaidur had no lawyer representing him in court.
Nazrul and his first wife, Maksuda Islam, have already been arrested in the case. After completing a one-day remand, Maksuda was sent to jail. Nazrul, meanwhile, remains on police remand.
The court has set October 22 as the date for submitting the investigation report in the case.
In July, after a video showing an intimate moment involving Mariam went viral, Nazrul announced that he had married for a second time. He subsequently began living with Mariam in a flat in a building in the residential area for members of parliament near Manik Mia Avenue.
Mariam’s body was found hanging in that flat on September 20. Police recovered several notes from the flat, which they believe were written by Mariam. The notes contained various allegations against Nazrul.
Meanwhile, Obaidur had previously filed a case against Nazrul alleging an attempt to murder him. Nazrul was on bail in that case.
