Court sentences Siam to 4 years, orders Tk 31.81 lakh confiscated

A court sentenced Syed Sohanur Rahman Siam, son of Syed Abed Ali Jibon - a driver named in the Public Service Commission (PSC) question leak scandal - to four years of imprisonment in a case involving the acquisition of wealth beyond known sources of income totaling Tk 31 lakh.
Judge BM Tariqul Kabir of the Dhaka Divisional Special Judge Court announced the verdict on Thursday. Along with the prison sentence, Siam was fined Tk 20,000, with an additional six months of rigorous imprisonment in default of payment. The court ordered the confiscation of Tk 31,81,000 of his assets beyond known sources of income into the state treasury.
Siam was sent back to jail after the hearing. The case was filed on 5 January 2025 at the ACC Integrated District Office-1 by Deputy Assistant Director Zakir Hossain, alleging that Siam acquired wealth worth Tk 37,30,000 beyond known sources of income between 3 September 2021 and 30 June 2024. Following the investigation, Zakir submitted a charge sheet accusing Siam on 30 December of the same year.
The charge sheet detailed information on movable and immovable assets worth Tk 31,81,000 that were inconsistent with his known income sources. The trial began on 17 June with the framing of charges. During the proceedings, the judge recorded testimony from all 11 witnesses.
