Tribunal sentences stepfather to death in case filed over pregnancy

A tribunal has sentenced stepfather Jamal Hossain to death in the case filed over the rape and pregnancy of a seventh-grade schoolgirl. The tribunal delivered the verdict today, Tuesday, in the case involving an incident took place at Kamrangirchar area in the capital in 2023.
Judge Masrur Salekin of the Dhaka Children's Violence Suppression Tribunal delivered the verdict in the presence of the accused. At the same time, he imposed a fine of five lakh taka. He was later sent to jail with a sentence warrant.

In the observation of the verdict, the judge said that Jamal Hossain forcibly raped the 13-year-old girl. According to the decision of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, the court will fail in its duty if appropriate punishment is not given for this crime. The incident is unfortunate not only for the victim but also for the society of which the victim is a part. It is the duty of the court to respond to the cry of society and to give appropriate punishment for such a heinous crime. The accused, Jamal Hossain, committed a heinous crime by raping the girl inhumanely.
According to the case details, the child lived with her mother and stepfather in the Kamrangirchar area. Taking advantage of her mother's absence from home, Jamal Hossain raped her on August 28, 2023. Later, the child became pregnant and gave birth to a baby. In this incident, the teenager's mother filed a case as the complainant with Kamrangirchar Police Station. After the investigation, on January 23, 2025, the investigating officer of the case and police SI Mohammad Ali submitted the charge sheet to the court. On August 24 of last year, charges were framed against the accused and the trial began. During the trial, the tribunal received the testimony of eight people.
