No connection between death sentences for Awami League leaders and revenge

Prime Minister's Advisor for Information and Broadcasting Dr. Zahed Ur Rahman has said that there is no connection between the death sentences awarded to seven accused, including Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, in a crimes against humanity case and any revenge. According to him, the government welcomes this verdict and seeks to ensure justice in society.
He said this while responding to journalists questions during a discussion on Tuesday regarding the progress of various government activities. When asked about the government's position on the court's verdict against Obaidul Quader, Zahed Ur Rahman said, "The government has nothing to say on this matter. Those who are on the prosecution team in this case are working."
He added, "We are the people. So what we want to see—many say we have become very happy seeing the death sentence. Rather than being very happy seeing someone's death sentence, the important thing is whether we can ensure justice in society."
The Prime Minister's advisor also remarked that if the accused were in the country, they could have presented their position before the court regarding the allegations brought against them.
In the case of crimes against humanity committed during the anti-discrimination student movement, the International Crimes Tribunal has sentenced seven accused, including the banned Awami League's General Secretary Obaidul Quader, to death. The three-member judicial panel led by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, Chairman of Tribunal-2, announced this verdict. The reading of the verdict began at 12:10 PM and the Tribunal Chairman read the summary portion of the 557-page verdict for about 30 minutes. At the very beginning of the verdict reading, Obaidul Quader's death sentence was announced. Subsequently, the court also announced death sentences for Awami League Joint General Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim, former State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Mohammad Ali Arafat, Jubo League President Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash and General Secretary Mainul Hossain Khan Nikhil. Finally, the Tribunal announced death sentences for banned student organization Chhatra League President Saddam Hossain and General Secretary Sheikh Wali Asif Inan. All accused in this case are fugitives.
