Osman Hadi murder investigation report delayed 20 times

A Dhaka court has set 3 November as the new date for submitting the further investigation report in the murder case of Inqilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate of Dhaka Jashita Islam set the date on Sunday. The submission of the further investigation report has now been delayed 20 times.

The court had set Sunday as the date for submitting the further investigation report. However, the investigating officer in the case and Assistant Superintendent of Police of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Abdul Qadir Bhuiyan could not submit any report to the court. The court therefore set a new date for submitting the report.

According to the case details, Hadi ended his election campaign after attending Friday prayers in Motijheel on 12 December last year. Later, while he was on his way to Suhrawardy Udyan, the autorickshaw carrying Hadi reached the Box Culvert area under Paltan Model Police Station around 2:20 pm that day. Miscreants riding a motorcycle shot him with the intention of killing him and fled the scene.

He was later taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition. After undergoing surgery there, he was transferred to Evercare. He was later sent to Singapore on 15 December for advanced treatment. He died there while undergoing treatment on 18 December.

The case was later converted into a murder case. After completing the investigation, the Detective Branch filed a charge sheet on 6 January against 17 people including former ward councilor Taizul Islam Chowdhury Bappi and Faisal Karim Masud.

However, expressing dissatisfaction with the charge sheet submitted by the DB police, Inqilab Mancha Member Secretary Abdullah Al Jaber filed a no confidence petition on 15 January. After a hearing, the court granted the petition and directed the CID to conduct a further investigation.
