HC set to rule on death references in Nusrat Jahan murder case

The verdict on the death reference and appeal in the high-profile case of the murder of madrasa student Nusrat Jahan Rafi in Feni will be delivered on Monday. Ahead of the verdict day, additional police have been deployed at Nusrat's home in the North Char Chandia area of Sonagazi upazila.
The Officer-in-Charge of Sonagazi Model Police Station, Md. Abul Hashim, said police security hav already been in place at the house. Now, with the verdict on the death reference and appeal approaching, additional police have been deployed to ensure that no untoward incident occurs from any side.
Police said that a team led by the Sonagazi police station OC reached the house of Md. Musa in the North Char Chandia area on Sunday afternoon. They patrolled the entire area multiple times. Later, in a brief briefing, the OC said that the law and order situation in the area was normal. However, police remained vigilant to prevent any untoward incident. He also said that police security would be provided even after the verdict.
Nusrat was a student of Sonagazi Islamia Kamil Madrasa. On April 6, 2019, she was taken to a shelter house inside the madrasa and set on fire by miscreants because she had filed a case of sexual harassment against the then principal of the madrasa. Her brother, Mahmudul Hasan Noman, filed a case in this regard.
On August 24 of that year, Judge Md. Mamunur Rashid of the Feni Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal sentenced all 16 accused to death and fined each of them one lakh taka. Later, the accused appealed to the higher court. The hearing of the appeal was concluded on August 20 before a special bench of Justice Bhishmadev Chakraborty and Justice K.M. Rasheduzzaman Raja.
Deputy Attorney General Syed Ejaz Kabir, citing court sources, told journalists that the verdict on the death reference and appeal in this high-profile case is expected to be announced on Monday.
It may be noted that the deceased Nusrat was the daughter of Md. Musa of the North Char Chandia area in Sonagazi upazila.
