Six more arrested over looting, vandalising RADDA facility in Mirpur city

Six more accused arrested in connection with the midnight attack, vandalism and looting at the Radda MCH-FP Center in Mirpur-1, Dhaka, have been sent to jail. With the four accused sent to jail earlier, a total of 10 people have so far been remanded in jail in the case.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Nazmin Akter passed the order on Sunday.
The six accused are Shahadat Hossain, Kazi Mokbul Hossain, Shah Alam, Atikur Rahman, Kamrul Islam and Shakil. They were produced before the court on Sunday. The investigating officer in the case, Shah Ali Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Atwar Rahman, then sought an order to keep them in jail.
On the other hand, defence lawyer Muhammad Emran filed a bail petition for the accused and also sought a hearing on the bail applications on Monday.
The court rejected the bail pleas and sent the accused to jail, scheduling a hearing on their bail applications for Monday.
Earlier, on Saturday, accused Md Sohel, Md Jewel, Md Jihad Hasan and Md Rabby were sent to jail in the case.
Midnight vandalism and looting
According to the case statement, at around 12:05am on Friday night, a group of people entered the Radda MCH-FP Center in the Shah Ali police station area carrying hammers, sticks and locally made weapons. They climbed over the boundary wall, assaulted and tied up the two night guards on duty, Andria Sarker, 43, and Md Abdul Hai, 63, and detained them.
The attackers then broke open the main gate with hammers and entered the premises with an excavator.
They first demolished a semi-pucca building on the eastern side of the facility, measuring about 28 feet by 15 feet, using the excavator, causing an estimated loss of Tk 300,000. They then vandalised another semi-pucca building used for family planning services and its furniture, causing an estimated loss of Tk 400,000.
The attackers also vandalised a semi-pucca building measuring about 60 feet by 17 feet that was used by the clinic in-charge, doctors and deputy clinic in-charge, along with furniture and medical equipment. The complaint estimates the damage at around Tk 2 million.
The registration section, measuring about 100 feet by 40 feet, was also vandalised, causing another estimated Tk 2 million in damage. Finally, doors and windows of the permanent building housing the ultrasonography, vaccination and laboratory units were smashed, causing an estimated loss of Tk 200,000.
In addition to the vandalism, the attackers allegedly looted two ultrasonography machines, a generator, two computers, two printers, three refrigerators, three air conditioners, three steel cabinets, and a large quantity of medicines and other materials. The estimated value of the looted items is around Tk 6 million.
Executive Director of Radda MCH-FP Center Dr Nasrin Akter filed the case with Shah Ali Police Station. The case names Md Hanif Mia and around 200 to 250 unidentified people as accused.
On Saturday, a court sent four accused arrested in connection with the incident to jail. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Siddiq Azad passed the order after a hearing.
The four accused are Md Sohel, 22, Md Jewel, 23, Md Jihad Hasan, 21, and Md Rabby, 20.
