Law Minister Md Asaduzzaman said action will be taken against judges who are negligent in performing their duties.
He made these remarks as the chief guest at the inauguration ceremony of the e-Family Appellate Court in Dhaka on Thursday.
Asaduzzaman said, “In some places there are complaints that some hold court for two to three hours, arrive at 11 am, and finish work and leave between 1:30 pm and 2 pm. If there are any such luxury-loving judicial officers, we will certainly take action against them.”
Although the law minister spoke of taking action, he did not clarify the process through which the government would take action against officers under the independent judiciary.
Emphasizing the restoration of public trust in the judiciary, Asaduzzaman added, “I want to take the justice to a place of people’s trust, faith, and confidence.”
However, the law minister also acknowledged the pressure that the case backlog is creating on judges. He noted, “More than 46 lakh cases are pending in the country. Trying to dispose of this huge number of cases places pressure on judges. We are working to reduce this pressure.
“The biggest challenge in present times is artificial intelligence and the digital sector. To tackle AI, we need to be even more proficient in the digital sector. In particular, our young judges are much smarter. I believe they will accept this challenge and take AI forward.”
Alongside highlighting the benefits of introducing e-bail bonds, the law minister said, “We have a law regarding taking testimony digitally and giving appearance digitally. We are thinking about how this too can be brought digitally.
“They will give their appearance while staying in prison on the scheduled date. The official will produce him from there and confirm, and the court will confirm his digital appearance.”
