The Chamber Court has stayed the bail granted to Mahmudul Hasan Mohin, an accused in the case over the murder of businessman Lal Chand, also known as Sohag, who was beaten to death with stones in broad daylight near Mitford Hospital in Dhaka.
Chamber Judge Justice Md. Rezaul Haque issued the order on Sunday after hearing a petition filed by the state challenging the High Court's bail order.
Attorney General Barrister Md. Ruhul Quddus Kajal later confirmed the development at a briefing. He said the Chamber Court's order means that Mohin will not be released from jail arounbd this time.
On September 28, a High Court bench comprising Justice Md. Ruhul Quddus and Justice Syed Hasan Zubair granted six months' interim bail to Mohin, the prime accused in the case. The court also issued a rule asking why he should not be granted permanent bail.
Commenting on the High Court's decision, Deputy Attorney General Syeda Shazia Sharmin had said Mohin was granted interim bail because there were no specific allegations against him.
Although the High Court granted bail on September 28, the matter became public on Thursday.
Lawyer Mohammad Asaduzzaman argued the bail petition on Mohin's behalf before the High Court.
Asked about the state's next course of action following the bail order, Attorney General Barrister Md. Ruhul Quddus Kazal told reporters that the state would file a leave-to-appeal petition with the Appellate Division seeking a stay of the order. On Sunday, after hearing the state's petition, the Chamber Court stayed Mohin's bail.
On the afternoon of July 9, 2025, scrap and old-wire trader Sohag, also known as Lal Chand, was brutally beaten to death with concrete blocks in front of Gate No. 3 of Mitford Hospital. His body and head were crushed in the attack. The incident sparked widespread outrage after video footage of the killing circulated on social media.
According to police and local residents, those seen taking part in the killing, as well as those allegedly involved behind the scenes, all knew Sohag. Some of them had previously worked with him in his business.
Sohag's elder sister, Manjuara Begum, filed the case with Kotwali Police Station. On December 8 last year, the investigation officer, Kotwali Police Station Inspector Moniruzzaman, submitted a charge sheet against 21 accused. On July 12, the court ordered the trial to begin.
