Murder case filed against 125 including Hasina and Joy, PBI to investigate

A murder case has been filed against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy along with 125 others over the death of BNP activist Zahid Hossain Rabbi in the Khilgaon area of the capital during the July movement.
On Tuesday, Rabbi's maternal uncle and Jubo Dal leader Naim Kalimullah Sarker filed an application seeking to register the case. After a hearing, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Rounak Jahan Taki accepted the case. At the same time, the court directed the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to investigate the allegations and submit a report by November 2.
Court bench assistant Md. Ripon Mia confirmed the information on Wednesday.
The notable accused in the case include Obaidul Quader, general secretary of the banned Awami League and former Road Transport and Bridges Minister; former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal; former adviser to Sheikh Hasina Salman F Rahman; former security affairs adviser Tarique Ahmed Siddique; former Law Minister Anisul Huq; former Foreign Minister Dr. Hasan Mahmud; former Food Minister Kamrul Islam; and former Culture Minister Asaduzzaman Noor.
According to the case statement, Rabbi was involved in BNP politics. He was a photographer and graphic designer. He regularly participated in the movement. On August 5, 2024, the final day of the July movement, Rabbi took part in the protests in the Taltala area of Khilgaon. He was shot at around 2 pm. He was rescued and taken to Mugda Medical College Hospital where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.
A total of 663 cases have been filed across the country against ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina over incidents during the July mass uprising. Of these, 453 are murder cases. Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) reported the information in February this year.
