Milk Vita raises milk price by Tk 10 per liter

The price of pasteurized liquid milk sold under the state owned Milk Vita brand has increased by Tk 10 per liter. The new price, which took effect at the consumer level on August 5, has raised the price of one liter of milk from Tk 100 to Tk 110.

Milk Vita Chairman S M Amir Hamza Shatil said the media that the price was increased because overall production costs have risen.

Bangladesh Milk Producers’ Cooperative Union Limited produces milk under the Milk Vita brand. The organization aims to achieve self sufficiency in the production of milk and dairy products.

S M Amir Hamza Shatil said, “The price of our packaged milk, which comes in one liter packages weighing between 1 kilogram 30 grams and 1 kilogram 50 grams, has been increased by Tk 10. The reason is that our production costs have increased. There was pressure from all members of our cooperative. The costs of gas, cattle feed, electricity and, above all, overall production costs have continued to rise.”

The Milk Vita chairman also said the prices of key packaging materials have increased because of the recent war involving the United States, Iran and Israel. He said, “Because of the war, the price of our main packaging material, polyfilm, has increased. We previously bought it for Tk 275 to Tk 280 per kilogram. Now we have to buy it for Tk 450 per kilogram. Many times, we are also unable to get the supply.”

He also claimed that the prices of all Milk Vita packaging materials, including cups, bottles and ice cream cans, as well as all products, have doubled for this reason.

S M Amir Hamza Shatil also claimed that higher gas prices and inadequate gas supplies have increased production costs. He said, “We do not get gas. Dhaka Dairy has had no gas for the past 45 days. Because of this, we have to buy LPG from the market at three times the price.”

He said higher prices for cattle feed and electricity have also increased production costs.
