Prime Minister's Advisor for Information and Broadcasting, Dr. Zahed Ur Rahman has warned that the Bangladesh government will take necessary measures against those who harassed Dr. Muhammad Yunus in the United States.
Blaiming supporters of the ousted Awami League for the incident, he said, "We want to tell the Awami League terrorists staying in various places abroad that if they try to take such steps, it will not go unchallenged, there is no question about it."
Dr. Yunus, the chief adviser of the previous interim government, was harassed at John F. Kennedy (JFK) International Airport in New York, United States, yesterday Monday.
Earlier last month, actress Azmeri Haque Badhan faced harassment in Italy. There are also allegations that Awami League supporters were involved in her harassment.
Today Tuesday, at a weekly press conference at the Secretariat, journalists brought up the matter before the Information Advisor and asked about the government's steps.
Zahed said that just as the government took steps in the incident of harassment of actress Badhan, similar steps will be taken this time as well.
The advisor also said that the government will investigate whether there was any deficiency in the security of former head of government Dr. Yunus.
After the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government via July 2024 uprising, Nobel laureate Dr. Yunus took charge as chief adviser of the interim government formed at that time. After the formation of a BNP government through elections at the beginning of this year, he stepped down.
He also mentioned that not only in the case of Dr. Yunus, but also a state minister of the government and individuals associated with the July movement had to face such incidents on foreign soil.
Zahed Ur Rahman said, "These are not the work of pressure groups, these are Awami terrorism. We want to explain the matter in this way."
In response to a question about discussions on Sheikh Hasina, who was ousted in the mass uprising and is staying in India, returning to the country in December, he said the government wants Sheikh Hasina to return to Bangladesh and face the judicial process of the cases against her.
For this, the adviser called on India to hand her over to Bangladesh.
He said that if Sheikh Hasina returns to the country, the government has no problem; rather, the government's goal is to ensure justice for the allegations of crimes against humanity raised against her.
The Information Adviser also spoke about the role of the media at the press conference. In response to a question about the manner in which some media outlets presented news regarding the harassment of Dr. Yunus and individuals associated with the July movement and the interim government, he said that the matters of media reports and presentation are under the ministry's attention.
