“I think media workers will go to hell in the largest numbers from the field of Judgment Day,” Satkhira's Tala Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer, Dr. Mizanur Rahman, wrote in a post on his Facebook account on Wednesday.

His controversial comment has drawn widespread condemnation from journalists in the upazila. Leaders of various journalist organizations at the district and upazila levels in Satkhira have also expressed their anger.

Tala Press Club President Selim Haider said the media serves as a mirror of the state and society. Journalists' primary responsibility is to deliver objective news and expose irregularities and corruption. Making sweeping remarks about media workers is highly condemnable, he said.

Journalist leaders demanded that the health official issue an unconditional apology immediately.

Several attempts were made to contact Dr. Mizanur Rahman by phone for comment on the matter, but he did not respond.

Satkhira Civil Surgeon Md. Abdus Salam, however, expressed concern over the incident.

“A responsible doctor or official can never make such comments about journalists. The matter is being investigated seriously. Necessary administrative action will be taken,” he said.
