The use of artificial intelligence in healthcare can help doctors make decisions. However, the technology must be used while ensuring patient safety, data privacy and doctors’ professional responsibilities, said Mohammad Salah Uddin Mamun, head of digital, brand and public relations at Evercare Hospital Chattogram.

In an article, he said artificial intelligence is creating new opportunities to analyze medical data, review medical images and simplify hospital administrative tasks. However, the technology cannot replace doctors’ professional judgment and responsibilities.

According to Mohammad Salah Uddin Mamun, treatment decisions must take into account a patient’s age, medical history, physical condition and medication details. Although artificial intelligence can analyze large volumes of data to identify potential risks, doctors’ skills and experience are necessary to determine the relevance of that information to individual patients.

He noted that artificial intelligence can produce misleading results when based on incomplete or incorrect information. Therefore, its reliability, safety and effectiveness must be verified before the technology is used in healthcare. Measures must also be in place to protect patient data privacy, train doctors and healthcare workers and effectively identify technological errors.

He further said that the importance of human interaction with patients would not diminish as the use of technology in healthcare increases. Listening to patients’ concerns, explaining treatment options and informing them about potential risks are important parts of medical care.

He also emphasized the need to ensure skilled personnel, reliable data, necessary infrastructure and effective policies to make artificial intelligence useful in Bangladesh’s healthcare sector. In his view, the success of the technology must be measured by its actual benefits to patients and its effectiveness and safety in treatment.

According to Mohammad Salah Uddin Mamun, the primary goal of healthcare is not to increase the use of technology but to ensure safe, effective and responsible medical care for people. To harness the potential of artificial intelligence, priority must be given to patients, doctors and the mutual trust between them.
