Jamaat chief condemns uproar over Rumeen Farhana remarks

Opposition leader Shafiqur Rahman and MP Rumeen Farhana
The Leader of the Opposition and Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh, Dr Shafiqur Rahman, has expressed strong anger over what he described as ‘unacceptable gesture’ and obstruction faced by MP Barrister Rumeen Farhana during her speech in Parliament on the ongoing energy crisis.
Raising a point of order during Sunday’s session, he condemned the conduct of treasury bench members while Rumeen Farhana was speaking. He said the behaviour undermined parliamentary norms.
Describing Parliament as the highest place of respect mandated by the people, the opposition leader said only the Speaker has the authority to regulate a member’s speech.
“Some respected members made gestures that deeply hurt my conscience. This was not once or twice, but by members who have been elected four or five times to this House. It is completely unacceptable, and I am compelled to strongly condemn it,” Shafiqur Rahman said.
He further said, “Honorable Speaker, I noticed twice today that, members of the treasury bench—who are supposed to cooperate with you the most—continued their behavior despite your repeated requests. We have come here to practice good parliamentary culture.”
He urged all members present to maintain parliamentary decorum.
Earlier in the session, Rumeen Farhana sharply criticized the government over rising fuel prices and the ongoing energy crisis. She questioned why long queues for fuel continue if there is no crisis and why prices were increased while holding ordinary people ‘hostage’.
Her remarks triggered uproar and disorder in Parliament, which later escalated into a strong reaction from the opposition leader.
