Tarique Rahman calls for international cooperation for climate-vulnerable nations

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has warned that rising sea levels pose not merely an environmental disaster, but a multidimensional and existential threat to climate-vulnerable countries, including coastal and island nations. To address this crisis, he stressed the need for coordinated initiatives by the international community, equitable financing, enhancement of adaptation capabilities, and effective international cooperation for affected nations.

The Prime Minister highlighted these issues today, Thursday, while delivering his address at a high-level meeting titled "High-Level Meeting to Address the Existential Threats Posed by Sea-Level Rise" held at Conference Room-4 of the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

Organized on the sidelines of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly, the meeting focused significantly on the multifaceted crisis confronting coastal and island states, as well as countries most vulnerable to climate change, due to rising sea levels.

In his speech, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman emphasized the necessity of collective international action to combat the impacts of climate change. He specifically called for ensuring fair and equitable climate financing and building adaptive capacity for vulnerable and impacted countries.

The Prime Minister also underscored the need for effective international cooperation to mitigate the existential risks faced by coastal regions and island nations from sea level rise. Furthermore, he urged the global community to stand more effectively alongside affected nations in countering the effects of climate change.

The high-level meeting, convened during the 81st UN General Assembly session, was attended by heads of state and government from various countries, along with representatives from relevant international organizations.
