Series of meetings to be held on constitutional amendments

The special committee formed by the National Parliament on constitutional amendments is set to begin a series of meetings with stakeholders to implement the July National Charter. The process will begin with a meeting with representatives of 33 political parties and alliances that signed the July National Charter 2025. The meeting will be held at the Cabinet Room of the National Parliament Building on Sunday afternoon.

The special committee will then hold meetings with all stakeholders in phases. The discussions will mainly focus on the broad areas of the existing Constitution that need to be reformed to implement the July Charter which was signed through political consensus. After these meetings, a constitutional amendment bill will be placed in Parliament based on the committee’s report. The ruling party says necessary amendments to the Constitution will be made through discussions in Parliament and based on consensus to meet public expectations and ensure democratic reforms to the state structure.

The BNP government has said from the beginning that it will implement the July Charter signed through political consensus in full. However, constitutional amendments are necessary for this. It will amend the Constitution based on consensus in line with the signed July Charter and the BNP’s election manifesto.

Against this backdrop, the special committee held its first meeting on August 4. The parliamentary special committee decided to conduct a comprehensive review of the existing Constitution based on the July National Charter and the BNP’s election manifesto. It also decided to prepare recommendations for amendments based on broader public opinion after taking views from families of those killed in the July Revolution, injured and struggling July fighters, representatives of the Anti-Discrimination Movement, constitutional experts, lawyers, political parties, professionals and various stakeholders.

The Bhashani Janashakti Party, a member of the Ganatantra Mancha, has already received an invitation to attend the second meeting of the special committee on constitutional amendments scheduled for September 20. Confirming the matter, party Chairman Sheikh Rafiqul Islam Bablu told Agamir Somoy, “We signed the July National Charter. The charter must be implemented in any way possible. This is a public demand. Bhashani Janashakti Party believes that if the July Charter is implemented, there will be no corruption or irregularities in the country.”

“Alongside the charter, Bhashani Janashakti Party wants the verdict of the referendum to be implemented. Therefore, whatever amendments and additions are necessary to the Constitution should be made as soon as possible,” he added.
