168 Bangladeshis return from Libya

Bangladeshis detained in Libya return home

A total of 168 Bangladeshi citizens detained at the Ganfuda Detention Center in Benghazi, Libya have been repatriated to Bangladesh. They were brought back with the cooperation of the Libyan government and the International Organization for Migration through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Bangladesh Embassy in Libya and the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment.

They returned to Bangladesh on a Burak Air flight on Tuesday.

Most of the repatriated Bangladeshis had attempted to travel to Europe illegally by sea. They entered Libya with the inducement and assistance of human traffickers. Many of them reportedly faced abduction and torture in Libya at different times.

Officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other relevant ministries as well as the International Organization for Migration received the repatriated Bangladeshi citizens at the airport.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged the victims to share their harrowing experiences with the public to raise awareness.

The IOM provided each returnee with travel expenses, some food supplies and primary medical care. Temporary accommodation was also arranged when necessary.
