Kuching tops global air pollution ranking, where does Dhaka stand?

Kuching in Malaysia tops the list of the world’s major cities for air pollution. The city’s air quality is at a hazardous level. Meanwhile Dhaka the capital of Bangladesh ranks 12th on the list with a score of 103.

According to the latest live data from IQAir at noon Friday Kuching’s Air Quality Index (AQI) score was 331. At the same time Dhaka’s AQI score was 103.

The list is prepared by comparing the hourly air quality of more than 100 major cities around the world. As a result, the rankings and scores of the cities may change over time.

Indonesia’s capital Jakarta ranked second on IQAir’s list with a score of 159. Singapore ranked third with a score of 151. Kampala in Uganda ranked fourth with a score of 134 while Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of the Congo ranked fifth with a score of 132.

Johannesburg in South Africa ranked sixth with a score of 129 while Lahore in Pakistan ranked seventh with the same score. Chengdu in China ranked eighth with a score of 118 while Kabul in Afghanistan ranked ninth with a score of 115. Tel Aviv Yafo in Israel ranked 10th with a score of 114 while Jerusalem ranked 11th with a score of 104.

Dhaka came next. With an AQI score of 103 the capital Dhaka ranked 12th among the world’s major cities with the highest levels of pollution. Dhaka’s air is currently at an unhealthy level for sensitive groups.

According to IQAir air with a score from 0 to 50 is considered good. A score from 51 to 100 is considered moderate. A score from 101 to 150 is considered unhealthy for sensitive groups. A score from 151 to 200 is considered unhealthy. A score from 201 to 300 is considered very unhealthy while a score of 301 or higher is considered hazardous.
