Md. Asaduzzaman Asad (54), former Education and Publicity Secretary of the Sharsha Upazila Awami League and former president of the Sharsha Upazila Press Club, has been arrested during a police operation in Jashore’s Sharsha upazila. Police have shown him arrested in connection with a case filed in 2025.
He was produced before a Jashore court on Monday afternoon, where Additional Senior Judicial Magistrate Achadul Islam rejected his bail petition and ordered that he be sent to jail.
Earlier that day, around 4:00 AM, police arrested him from his village home in Samta village of Sharsha upazila.
According to police and local sources, acting on a tip-off, a special team from Sharsha Police Station conducted a raid at Asaduzzaman Asad’s residence in Samta village early Monday morning. He was detained from his home during the operation.
Asaduzzaman’s sister, Shilpi Begum, said police entered the house by climbing over the wall around 2:00 AM and later forced the family to open the door. When asked about the reason for the arrest, police allegedly failed to show any legal documents or provide a clear explanation.
Speaking about her brother’s career, Shilpi Begum said Asaduzzaman had once worked as a college teacher while also being involved in local Awami League politics. He previously served as the Education Affairs Secretary of the upazila committee.
She added, “After the college was nationalized in April 2023, there was no opportunity for them to remain politically active. He had not been involved in politics and remained inactive. The committee’s term had already expired long before that.”
Apart from his political identity, Shilpi Begum also said that Asaduzzaman has been working as the Benapole correspondent for bdnews24.com.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Maruf Hossain of Sharsha Police Station told journalists that Asaduzzaman Asad previously held a position in the upazila Awami League. He was arrested over allegations of recent anti-government activities and planning sabotage.
