Govt reviewing 101 AL-era MoUs: Chief whip

Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni said the government is reviewing 101 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) signed during the tenure of the Awami League (AL) government and the reviews will be available very soon.
He made these remarks on Friday at a press conference following a parliament session. Moni added that efforts were made to strengthen Bangladesh’s economy, but due to not receiving expected cooperation, some decisions were canceled.
Regarding maintaining relations with other countries, Moni noted that the country’s interest comes first. Arrangements were even made such that if two ships - one belonging to Bangladesh and another to a country - arrived together at Chattogram Port, the ship of the country would be unloaded first.
He said many agreements against national interests were executed during the AL government. He added, “We are trying to come out of that situation. Relations will be maintained only after protecting the country’s interests.”
Regarding the passage of the enforced disappearance prevention law in parliament, Moni noted that the home minister himself was a victim of enforced disappearance. Therefore, initiatives have been taken to make the enforced disappearance prevention law even stronger than before.
He informed that opinions were taken from all parties, including lawyers, judges, and journalists, prior to drafting the law. Even so, the opposition party is opposing the law.
Regarding the fertilizer crisis, Moni said there are still 16 lakh tons of surplus fertilizer in the country. He noted that the root cause of the crisis is management flaws. Nearly 4,000 fertilizer dealers appointed during the AL government are not in the country.
He added that at that time, fertilizer dealer licenses were given to individuals close to the government. The present situation has arisen due to their absence.
