Ivy Released from Prison on Bail

Selina Hayat Ivy

Former Narayanganj City Corporation Mayor Selina Hayat Ivy has been released on bail. She walked out of Kashimpur Central Women's Prison in Gazipur at 10:10 pm on Wednesday.

Shirin Akter Mukti, jail superintendent of Kashimpur Central Women's Prison, said authorities released Ivy after verifying bail documents and the final bail order in all 12 cases filed against her.

Police arrested Ivy from her residence in Deobhog, Narayanganj, in the early hours of May 9 last year. Authorities later showed her arrested in 12 cases filed under charges of murder, attempted murder, and the Explosives Act in connection with the Anti-Discrimination Student-People's Movement.

On April 30, the High Court granted her interim bail and issued a rule in two cases filed with Siddhirganj Police Station. The state subsequently filed separate petitions seeking a stay on the bail order. On May 17, the Chamber Court of the Appellate Division, led by Justice Md. Rezaul Haque, issued no order on the state's petitions seeking to suspend the High Court's bail order.

Earlier, on May 10, the Appellate Division upheld the High Court's bail orders in 10 separate cases, including murder charges, linked to the Anti-Discrimination Movement. After the Appellate Division's order upholding Ivy's bail in all 12 cases reached prison authorities and other relevant offices, officials completed the required verification process and released her.

Ivy served as mayor of Narayanganj Municipality from 2003 to 2011. She later won three consecutive elections as mayor of the newly established Narayanganj City Corporation.
