Doctor posts on Facebook: ‘Go to journalists when labor pain starts’

Dr. Khairatun Hissan Keya
A doctor accused of negligence following the death of a newborn in Chauddagram, Cumilla, has made a sarcastic remark about journalists. In a Facebook post on Tuesday (October 6), accused doctor Dr. Khairatun Hissan Keya referred to seeking journalists’ advice about labor pain and medical treatment.
In the Facebook post, Dr. Keya wrote, “You should do one thing from now on. When labor pain starts, go to journalists. Or when the pain does not start or your water does not break, take all such decisions from journalists and ask them to provide the treatment.”
She made the remark shortly after local journalists published reports about allegations of negligence against the doctor over the death of a newborn in Chauddagram.
Recently, relatives accused Dr. Keya of negligence during the delivery of Nazma Akter, a pregnant woman from Khamar Pushkarani village in the upazila. They alleged that although a normal delivery was attempted for a long time, the newborn eventually died. They also claimed that marks of injury were later found on the newborn’s head. Nazma was then taken to a private hospital in Cumilla city in critical condition.
However, Dr. Keya denied the allegations and told journalists that she had attempted a normal delivery. She said the patient was sent to Cumilla quickly because her condition was not good. When asked about the newborn’s death and the injury to the head, she said journalists should speak to the patient’s family.
Dr. Rashid Ahmed Chowdhury Tofayel, Chauddagram Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer, said legal action would be taken after discussing the matter with higher authorities if a written complaint is received from the affected family.
