A man and his wife jumped from the second floor of a resort into a nearby drain to save their lives during a devastating fire at a resort in Inani, Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar. They later went to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital. The man who survived the fire said they feared that many people staying at the resort might not have survived.
He said, “My wife and I jumped from the second floor of the resort into a nearby drain. Then we came to Sadar Hospital. There were around 20 to 25 or more people at the resort. As far as I know, only nine people, including us, have managed to get out alive so far. The others have probably died. All three children of a person staying next to us have died.”
Asked about the resort staff, he said, “I do not know whether the people working at the resort are even alive. We did not see any of them.”
The fire broke out at around 7:00 am on Saturday at Tutup Resort and Restaurant in the Patuyartek area along Marine Drive in Ukhiya. Ten people were killed and seven others were injured. In addition, 10 people were rescued.
After receiving reports of the fire, three Fire Service units arrived at the scene and began firefighting and rescue operations. The fire caused extensive damage to the resort.
