BGB seizes smuggled goods worth Tk 3.48 billion in August

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized smuggled goods worth Tk 3.478 billion during operations in border areas and various other parts of the country in August. A large quantity of drugs, weapons and ammunition was also recovered during the same period.
The information was disclosed in a statement issued Wednesday.
According to the statement, the smuggled goods seized by BGB included 8 kg 554 grams of gold, 21,646 sarees, 3,962 three-piece sets, shirt pieces, bed sheets and blankets, 5,154 readymade garments, 1,887 meters of fabric, 5,851 pieces of imitation jewelry, 606,241 cosmetic items and 1,040,196 pieces of fireworks.
In addition, BGB seized 4,711 cubic feet of timber, 104,494 kg of coal, 610 cubic feet of stones, 8,628 cubic feet of sand, 17,130 kg of tea leaves, 8,715 kg of betel nuts, 418 mobile phones, 7,848 mobile phone displays, 34,111 mobile phone components, 18,500 razor blades and 11,758 pairs of glasses.
The statement also said other seized goods included 378,232 packets of chocolate, 7,637 packets of various types of seeds, 56,622 kg of cumin, 18,960 kg of garlic, 131 kg of cardamom, 7,972 kg of sugar, 34,057 kg of fertilizer, 180,000 pieces of shrimp fry, 11,451 kg of current nets and 743 liters of edible and fuel oil. In addition, 560 packets of pesticides, 604,788 pieces of various medicines, 5 kg 700 grams of snake venom and nine pieces of touchstone or sandstone were seized.
BGB also seized 14 trucks and covered vans, 10 pickup trucks, six private cars, three trolleys, 61 CNGs, easy bikes, auto rickshaws and handcarts, 91 motorcycles, 83 bicycles and vans and 97 boats used for smuggling.
The weapons recovered during the operations included 14 locally made and foreign pistols, 10 magazines and 74 rounds of ammunition.
A large quantity of drugs was also seized during BGB operations in August. These included 4,593,863 yaba tablets, 4 kg of crystal meth or ice, 1,371 bottles of Phensedyl, 7,636 bottles of foreign liquor, 345 liters of Bangla liquor, 1,756 cans of beer and 1,863 kg 680 grams of cannabis.
In addition, 228,039 narcotic tablets and injections, 22,006 bottles of various types of syrups, 10,643 pieces of other tablets and 126,661 packets of bidis and cigarettes were seized.
A total of 220 smugglers were arrested for their alleged involvement in smuggling and drug trafficking along the border. Meanwhile, 37 Bangladeshis, six Indians and 188 Myanmar nationals were also arrested for illegally crossing the border, the statement said.
