Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has urged universities across the country to place greater emphasis on research.
He made the remarks on Tuesday morning (12 May) while inaugurating a national workshop organized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) on “Improving and Transforming Bangladesh’s Higher Education System in a Sustainable Manner.” The event was held at the Nawab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Building of University of Dhaka.
The Prime Minister said that the education curriculum—from primary to higher levels—is being comprehensively restructured. “Universities must move beyond rote learning and focus on research,” he said.
“If we fail to advance in innovation, we will not be able to survive in a highly competitive world,” the head of government added.
Tarique Rahman also spoke about university rankings, expressing concern that Bangladeshi universities have not yet reached the top tiers. “In terms of rankings, our universities have not achieved the desired heights. We must shift our attention from textbook-based education to research. The government will provide funding to advance research activities. Students are the lifeblood, and alumni are the backbone,” he explained.
The workshop was also attended by Education Minister A. N. M. Ehsanul Haque Milon and the Prime Minister’s Education Affairs Adviser Mahdi Amin. The session was chaired by UGC Chairman Professor Mamun.
