A vehicle of the National Citizen Party (NCP) was attacked in Golapganj, Sylhet. The attack took place at around 3 pm Thursday on the vehicle carrying Sarjis Alam, the party’s chief coordinator for the northern region.
Golapganj Police Station Officer in Charge (OC) Mohammad Shabed Ali confirmed the incident. However, police did not provide details.
According to local sources, the NCP held a discussion meeting with family members of the July martyrs at the Golapganj Upazila Auditorium in the morning. After the event, the party leaders left for Kanaighat. The attack on Sarjis Alam’s vehicle took place as the motorcade was passing through the Upazila Parishad area.
No casualties were reported in the attack. Immediately after the incident, additional police, APBn and other law enforcement personnel were deployed in and around the Upazila Parishad premises.
NCP leader and lawmaker Dr. Mahmuda Mitu reported the attack in a Facebook post. She alleged that ‘BNP terrorists’ were involved in the attack. “Me, Sarjis and several others were in the vehicle.”
Mitu said, “They are actually trying to kill us. They smashed the windows on the right side and the rear of our vehicle into pieces. Police were standing there doing nothing. You cannot ask Tarique Rahman for an explanation, otherwise that would apparently be considered disrespectful again.”
Earlier, on Tuesday, the NCP’s vehicle convoy came under attack during the party’s ‘July March’ program in Habiganj. Party leaders blamed the attack on Chhatra Dal. The following day, while traveling to join a protest program in Habiganj, the vehicle convoy of the party’s central leaders was stopped multiple times by police in Sreemangal and Bahubal areas of Moulvibazar.
